What does Maintain do?

Maintain finds problems in your code against Rules you choose, lets you Triage what it finds, and helps you decide where each Fix should go.

Rules and Scans

A Rule describes something to look for in plain words, for example exceptions that are silently swallowed, or loops that repeat the same work. You can write Rules with an agent, write them in Markdown, import them, or pick them from the library. Existing Claude Code configuration can be converted into Rules. The "Discovery candidates" Rule looks for code that would gain more from a Discovery Run than from a one-off Fix.

A Scan is an agent reading your code against up to 20 Rules at a time. It does not run your tests. Each finding becomes an Issue on the board, with a severity and a confidence. An Issue is something the agent found in the code, which you then confirm or dismiss.

Triage

Issues move across four lanes: Untriaged, Triaged, In progress and Done. Triage is where you decide which Issues are real and worth your time, with severity and confidence as a guide.

Choosing where each Fix goes

Each Issue can be fixed in several ways:

  • A coding agent fixes it inside Artemis. This suits small, clear changes.
  • Fix in Discovery hands a harder Issue, often a performance one, to a Discovery Run through the Maintain chat.
  • Plan a fix writes a Markdown Plan with Tasks and done-when criteria before any code changes.
  • Copy for local agent, or the CLI, hands the Issue to your local agent, such as Claude Code or Codex. Your agent can submit its Fix back to the Issue, so the board keeps the record.
